Fox News airs live footage of man commiting suicide

A carjacking in Arizona ended when the suspect shot himself in the head today as footage of the incident was broadcast live on Fox News Channel.

A chopper covered the high-speed chase along I-10 outside Phoenix. Initial reports indicated that a victim may have remained in the stolen car.

Chopper video showed the vehicle zooming along Arizona's wide open highway, flashing past cars and trucks, switching lanes as it weaved through traffic, often speeding along the shoulder of the road. The camera from the chopper captured the moment the chase ended with a male stumbling out of a red SUV into a grassy area. He reached into his waistband and pulled a handgun. He then shot himself in the head.

Fox cut away from the shot soon after the man shot himself and went to commercial break.

Following the break anchor Shepard Smith apologized for airing the shooting. He said the feed was on a five second delay, but they failed to cut it off in time.

"We really messed up and we're all very sorry," he said. "That didn't belong on TV... I personally apologize to you that it happened."

"It's insensitive and it's wrong," he said of airing the shooting.

Rest In Peace, Charles Alfred Eldon: A Pioneer Of Silicon Valley, A Role Model For This New Generation

180px-Eldon_005Decades before Steve Jobs, the Google founders, and Mark Zuckerberg, small groups of unglamorous technologists turned Santa Clara Valley into the world-changing region we are still reinventing today.?My grandpa, Charles Alfred ?Bud? Eldon, was one of them, a Hewlett-Packard engineer and executive since the days of the apricot orchards. He passed away at 7:45am this morning. I'm going to share a little bit about his life below, because my generation in Silicon Valley and the tech world needs to know about all the shoulders of giants we are standing on, and the heights we can also reach. Social Networking: 5 tips to Skyrocket Your Sales ~ Article Marketing ...

You?re probably aware of the gigantic number of users of social media ? well over a billion for the top two social networks combined ? and the waves that these platforms are making in the business world. Facebook and the micro-blogging platform Twitter count consumers from nearly every country on the planet, which is why social media marketing tips can become the catapult your business needs for leaping ahead of your competition.

With that said; there are many methods out there for getting people to join your social network; but there are fewer for getting those people to engage frequently and for a sizable fraction of them to convert to sales. Here are 5 of the more effective social media marketing tips that may help your business experience real results in the sales department:

  1. Building a useful social network requires a strong foundation; the first thing you should do is of course sign up for Facebook. Afterwards, specifically create a business page separate from a personal profile, so that fans can ?Like? you and decide to follow the progress of your business. This is precisely the platform you will be using primarily for future business-related promotions and updates to keep your growing community together and informed.
  2. The old adage ?never put all your eggs in one basket? is very timely and applicable here: Facebook is not the only place where social media marketing tips can apply ? even if it is currently the biggest. Set up social networks on YouTube to get video messages out there; given the huge increase in mobile marketing and video downloads and viewing in general, working to get subscribers to your YouTube account can be a big sales generator in the years to come. Just don?t forget the call to action at the end of your videos, reminding your viewers to click the ?Subscribe? button.
  3. Keep in mind that what you choose to write about is just as important as how you write it. Although this is true offline as well as online, it is much more important in the latter: your headlines and subheads must ?pop?. They must be vibrant and engaging while remaining truthful; they must be engrossing without telling a lie. Furthermore, your headlines must be relatively short; you can?t generate sales if people are skipping over your post because the headline didn?t grab their attention.
  4. Interacting in a timely fashion with people who take the time to comment or ask questions is absolutely essential. More often than not, the single question that one person may ask is actually the same question many more wanted to know the answer to. You further show your audience that you take your business and their concerns seriously, which will keep your retention rate higher than the business that doesn?t bother ? and more traffic almost always equals greater sales.

  5. Social media marketing tips usually center on engagement with your audience; which means making sure the contributions to your social platform are consistent - as opposed to constant. Don?t focus on the mundane, at the risk of boring your audience; but be sure to always note new developments that you think are relevant to the interests of your audience. If at any time you hit a small rut in terms of things to say or add, never hesitate to check out what your competition is doing ? and duplicate the social media marketing tips of the more successful ones.
Social media, then, when used in conjunction with search engine optimization, can easily drive you ahead of your competition. ?Be sure to make a worksheet of the best avenues to take in both directions, comprised of?maybe?5-10 of the top methods. ?

Then focus on allocating time to these over the next few months, and Google (and Facebook) will reward you for it - all with no cost other than your time (although I can't think of anything worth more than your time - but nonetheless).?

Please feel free to comment below; just keep hyperlinks out of the text body unless they're truly relevant. ?Thanks for interacting!!!

Pepper-sprayed students to get $1 million in settlement

The University of California regents will pay about $1 million to 21 UC Davis current and former students who were pepper-sprayed during a peaceful campus protest last November.

A video of the incident that went viral shows an officer casually walking up to and aiming a thick stream of the spray directly into the faces of seated students at close range during an Occupy rally. The incident triggered outrage and an investigation by the university.

In the settlement, each student who filed suit will each receive $30,000 and a handwritten apology from UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi.

Student Ian Lee was a freshman when he was pepper sprayed.

"The reason we were protesting was that the university has proposed unfair and unreasonable tuition hikes," Lee said.

In addition, the university system has agreed to $250,000 for the students' legal fees.

Lee said he plans to use all of the money to pay future tuition.

"I know that's what a lot of my friends are doing. Some others are donating it, and some others are using the money to get a good start post-college in this difficult economic time," he said.

According to the deal reached earlier this month, the university has set aside $100,000 for additional students hit in the incident who wish to submit claims as a part of the class-action suit. Those students are set to receive up to $20,000 each depending of the number who come forward.

"What we hope to do with this settlement is cause structural changes to the university, so that it will not just tolerate but encourage free speech on campus," said ACLU lawyer Michael Risher.

In the agreement obtained by ABC News, students involved in the November incident will receive "reasonable assistance and counseling" for the "academic performance issues that allegedly arose as a result of the incident."

The settlement comes as a result of the November 18 Occupy protest at UC Davis. Students encamped in the university's quad in protest of rising tuition costs, were warned to leave before pepper sprayed by campus police.

According the settlement, the university believes "they acted reasonably and with good intentions, without violating the rights."

The papers filed this morning will not become official until approved by a federal judge.

ABC News Radio contributed to this report.

Web Marketing Made Easy With These Great Tips

There are lots of different ways to market with affiliates, depending on your technical expertise. You should know what you will be selling, and who wants to buy it. Hopefully, you do not have ambitions of simply mass-emailing every person you see sign in and pray for a quick profit. The secret lies in crafting a sound plan and knowing the market well.

Try asking for a raise if you are generating a good amount of leads. The program should be willing to pay you what you are worth and work to retain you as a productive sales force.

Use a multitude of venues when promoting your affiliate product. A part of your customer base will prefer searching the web for deals. Other customers may respond better to brochures and fliers. Many people will not buy anything unless they can get a good discount on it. Broadening your advertising approach can get the word out to a greater number of potential customers.

There are a wide variety of affiliate programs. They may offer a wide range of products and a variety of working conditions.

Only keep the affiliates that are extremely profitable, to make the most of your online marketing. Make sure you thoroughly review your affiliates performance. Choose to eliminate affiliates that are not giving you much revenue. This way you can add advertisers who will be more profitable.

Using the product yourself can instantly give your product a great amount of credibility. You can report how valuable the product has been for you via a blog, in a web article or product reviews. Posting on forums will also help you spread your point of view. Wherever you post on the web, always tag your affiliate link. You make the site available to any reader who enjoys your post and has an interest in buying a product.

Build your list of followers on Google Plus before your competitors do. Make sure your contacts on existing social networks know your Google Plus account name. Also, put a Google Plus button on your site to make even more contacts. Remember that having solid content is the best way to gain followers.

Provide alternative uses for the products that you sell through your affiliate programs. For example, if you?ve decided to sell extra absorbent dish rags, you can show them cleaning up a mess or drying your dishes.

Before you decide on prospective affiliates, make sure you have a clear understanding of your target audience. Partners with the right affiliates will increase traffic to your site and give you a good understanding of who your customers are and how to meet their needs.

Paid advertising, like Google?s Adsense, are well worth the cost. Ads that target keywords related to your product or service have a high success rate for drawing in potential customers.

Following the above tips will help attract users and help you make good profits. As you spend time working in the market, it is likely that you will develop your own techniques. They might even surpass those mentioned in this article. Remember the basics to create a simple and effective market plan

FBI to investigate officer shooting double-amputee

John Garcia stands in front of his home Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, in Houston, where police say an officer shot and killed a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair inside the group home. HOUSTON (AP) ? The FBI will help investigate what led a Houston police officer to shoot and kill a wheelchair-bound double amputee who was agitated and threatening police with what turned out to be a ballpoint pen, the city's police chief said Monday.

Police Chief Charles McClelland also asked the community to "reserve judgment" on the officer and his actions this weekend at the Healing Hands group home for the mentally ill, and sought to reassure the public that all of the city's officers are trained to deal with people with mental problems.

Officer Matthew Marin shot 45-year-old Brian Claunch early Saturday after responding to a call that the one-armed, one-legged man was causing a disturbance inside the home. Police have said Claunch cornered and threatened Marin, who reportedly told investigators he didn't know the object in Claunch's hand was a pen.

"It is my desire to have everyone reserve judgment until all the facts and evidence in this investigation have been gathered," McClelland said in a statement.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said she didn't know if FBI assistance in officer-involved shootings was rare, but said "it's the step we're taking at this point." She referred other questions to McClelland's statement.

Marin, a five-year veteran of the department, has been placed on three-day administrative leave. That is standard department procedure for all officer-involved shootings, and Silva said no unusual measures were being taken that would prevent Marin from returning to duty this week.

It's the second time Marin has killed a suspect while on duty. In 2009, investigators said Marin came upon a man stabbing his neighbor to death at an apartment complex and fired when the suspect refused to drop the knife.

Marin and a partner arrived at the group home around 2:30 a.m. responding to a disturbance call made by the group's caretaker. Police have not elaborated on the nature of the disturbance before they arrived.

Once inside the home, the department said in a separate statement released Monday, they found an agitated Claunch threatening to kill the officers and other residents. While yelling at the officers, Claunch "waved a shiny object in his hand in their direction," according to the statement.

Police say Claunch refused an officer's direction to drop what turned out to be a ballpoint pen.

"As the suspect backed one of the officers into a corner, he attempted to stab the officer with the object," the statement said. "Officer Marin, fearing for his partner's life, and his own safety, discharged his duty weapon one time, striking the suspect."

Washington state's first 'zombie bees' reported

SEATTLE (AP) ? The infection is as grim as it sounds: "Zombie bees" have a parasite that causes them to fly at night and lurch around erratically until they die.

And experts say the condition has crept into Washington state.

"I joke with my kids that the zombie apocalypse is starting at my house," said Mark Hohn, a novice beekeeper who spotted the infected insects at his suburban Seattle home.

Hohn returned from vacation a few weeks ago to find many of his bees either dead or flying in jerky patterns and then flopping on the floor.

He remembered hearing about zombie bees, so he collected several of the corpses and popped them into a plastic bag. About a week later, the Kent man had evidence his bees were infected: the pupae of parasitic flies.

"Curiosity got the better of me," Hohn said.

The zombie bees were the first to be confirmed in Washington state, The Seattle Times reported (http://is.gd/ji7UNX).

San Francisco State University biologist John Hafernik first discovered zombie bees in California in 2008.

Hafernik now uses a website to recruit citizen scientists like Hohn to track the infection across the country. Observers also have found zombie bees in Oregon and South Dakota.

The infection is another threat to bees that are needed to pollinate crops. Hives have been failing in recent years due to a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey bees in a colony suddenly die.

The life cycle of the fly that infects zombie bees is reminiscent of the movie "Alien," the newspaper reported. A small adult female lands on the back of a honeybee and injects eggs into the bee's abdomen. The eggs hatch into maggots.

"They basically eat the insides out of the bee," Hafernik said.

After consuming their host, the maggots pupate, forming a hard outer shell that looks like a fat, brown grain of rice. That's what Hohn found in the plastic bag with the dead bees. Adult flies emerge in three to four weeks.

There's no evidence yet that the parasitic fly is a major player in the bees' decline, but it does seem the pest is targeting new hosts, said Steve Sheppard, chairman of the entomology department at Washington State University.

"It may occur a lot more widely than we think," he said.

That's what Hafernik hopes to find out with his website, zombeewatch.org. The site offers simple instructions for collecting suspect bees, watching for signs of parasites and reporting the results.

Once more people start looking, the number of sightings will probably climb, Hohn said.

"I'm pretty confident I'm not the only one in Washington state who has them," he said.

Fish eaters run lower risk of heart attack, despite some mercury content, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Eat fish, but avoid fish with the most pollutants. This is the conclusion drawn by a group of researchers at Ume? University in Sweden after having weighed the risks of mercury content against the advantages of healthful fatty acids.

The work was done as part of an international collaborative effort.

Fish is healthful food, and several studies have shown that people who eat fish have a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases than those who eat very little or no fish. At the same time, some fish contain environmental pollutants that can be hazardous to our health. One such pollutant that is suspected of increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease is methyl mercury, which is found in varying degree in different kinds of fish. If people eat fish with much pollutants, this would lead to increased risk of disease, but at the same time if people are overly cautious and eat too little fish, the risk of disease also increases.

In order to attain a better understanding of what the golden mean might be, researchers at Ume? University, in collaboration with researchers from Finland and elsewhere, examined how the risk of heart attack (acute myocardial infarction) is contingent on the amount of omega-3 fats and mercury from fish that people have in their body. The content was measured in blood and hair samples from people that had previously participated in health studies in northern Sweden and eastern Finland. The Swedish blood samples were from the Medical Biobank in Ume?. Those who experienced a heart attack after the health check-up were compared with those who did not.

The findings are now being published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN). It turned out that mercury was linked to increased risk, and omega-3 fatty acids to decreased risk, of having a heart attack. The increased risk from mercury was noticeable only at high levels of this environmental pollutant in the body and if the level of the protective omega-3 fatty acids was concomitantly low. In other words, what is important is the balance between healthful and hazardous substances in fish. The environmental pollutant in this study was mercury. For organic pollutants like PCB and dioxin, the problem complex is similar, but no study of this kind has yet been undertaken.

The conclusion is simple: Eat fish, but avoid fish with the most pollutants. The Swedish National Food Agency recommends that people should eat fish 2-3 times a week, but their intake of predatory fish (e.g. pike, perch, pike-perch), which contain a great deal of mercury, should be limited (see link below). This study supports that recommendation. According to a recent study from the National Food Agency, 7 of 10 Swedes eat too little fish.

The 37th Toronto International Film Festival is behind us and the stars have retreated back to Hollywood. However, those who missed the festival can catch some of the films on the big screen in the coming months. Here are a few short reviews of the films that received the most buzz at the festival.

?Cloud Atlas?

This action-packed sci-fi drama, which brings together an all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh Grant, is about how good and evil actions in one?s life result in what they reincarnate as in the future. The movie is directed by the Wachowski?s of Matrix fame, two of the most creative minds in Hollywood. It?s like Avatar, The Matrix, and Star Trek combined into a three-hour story about the karmic relationships between people over different lifetimes. ?Cloud Atlas? is not only headed for top blockbuster hit of the year but is one of those films that leave audiences with food for thought. The six different stories intertwine in the most mystical and spiritual of ways, making the audience believe in destiny. Hits theatres Oct. 26.

?

?Silver Linings Playbook?

The acting is phenomenal in this comedy/drama that stars Robert DeNiro, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Chris Tucker. The film is directed by award-winning director, David O. Russell, who grabbed two Oscars for The Fighter. Silver Linings Playbook tells the story of two people?a high school teacher fresh out of a mental institution and a young, depressed widow?who find positives in each other although society labels them as outcasts. Their lives are complex but at the same time simple, and the two look for the silver lining in situations while battling their own problems. Critics say the film is headed straight for multiple Oscar nominations, including best actress for Jennifer Lawrence. It has already won the BlackBerry People?s Choice award for best film at TIFF. To be released Nov. 21.

?

?The Company You Keep?

This action-packed, based-on-real-life thriller will keep audiences on the edge of their seats as director Robert Redford carefully doles out revealing clues up until the last minutes of the film. The picture boasts a strong cast, including Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Julie Christie, and Shia LeBeouf. Redford also stars as the main character in the film, which is based on the American activist group Weather Underground that was formed to oppose the Vietnam War. Its members eventually integrated into society but were under the watch of the CIA for over 30 years. But when one of the activists admits that she was involved in a bombing incident, a whole chain of investigations follow and a reporter uncovers the identity of another member. To be released Nov. 15.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Looper.”/(Courtesy of TIFF)

?

?Looper?

This mind-bending time-travel thriller directed by Rian Johnson and starring Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt opened this year?s TIFF. The twisted plot takes place in the future; the mob sends people they want to get rid of back in time 30 years, where they are shot by a ?looper.? The loopers of course get a large sum of money for the job, but eventually pay the price by having to kill their future selves in order to ?close the loop.? Gordon-Levitt plays a younger Willis, whom he has to get rid of. Viewers should expect to see a lot of violence, which according to Johnson serves its purpose in the film. Looper will be released Sept. 28.

Helena Bonham Carter in “Great Expectations”/(Courtesy of TIFF)

?

?Great Expectations?

An adaptation of Charles Dickens? famous novel, this drama takes audiences into the life of an orphan who works as a blacksmith on a farm in Kent, but things change after a mysterious beneficiary funds him to become a gentleman in London. With an all-British cast, including Helena Bonham Carter (famous for her role in the Harry Potter movies as Bellatrix Lestrange) Ralph Fiennes, and Jeremy Irvine, the film is as authentic as the beautiful but sometimes dirty setting of London in the 1800s. Director Mike Newell, who has worked on some of the Harry Potter films, takes this dark tale and its morals?just as he takes the setting in the dark castle of Miss Havisham?to a whole new level. Scheduled for release Nov. 30.

Heisman finalist Ball out of game with head injury

(AP) ? Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball has left Wisconsin's game against UTEP with a head injury.

Ball appeared to be injured on a 1-yard scoring run at the start of the second quarter Saturday. He looked shaken as he got up, and the Wisconsin medical staff was quick to take him on the sidelines and examine him. A doctor or trainer rubbed Ball's neck at one point, and someone grabbed his helmet as soon as he stood up. An announcement was made that Ball had a head injury and would not be returning.

Ball finishes the day with nine carries for 40 yards. He also had the first fumble of his career; he had carried the ball 654 times without turning it over before his miscue on the opening drive.

A's top Tigers, avoid sweep

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:04 p.m. ET Sept. 20, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - The Oakland Athletics avoided a three-game sweep, yet still came out on the losing end.

Seth Smith homered, doubled and drove in four runs, and the Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 12-4 in a matchup of AL playoff contenders. But the wild-card co-leaders also learned they would be minus starter Brett Anderson for the remainder of the regular season.

An MRI revealed Anderson sustained a Grade 2 strain of his right oblique muscle on Wednesday night, when the left-hander awkwardly fell off the mound and exited after two-plus innings.

Anderson was 4-2 with a 2.57 ERA after six games while coming off Tommy John surgery. The A's revealed the extent of his latest injury after their victory.

"He's a guy that's got ace-type of stuff. It hurts to lose a starting pitcher," Athletics manager Bob Melvin said. "But we've lost a lot of starters in the last month and a half, three."

Melvin said he doesn't know about Anderson's availability for the postseason.

The team also is without Brandon McCarthy, who was hit in the head by a line drive, and Bartolo Colon, who was suspended for using a performance-enhancing drug.

Both clubs are in second place in their divisions, and Oakland is even with Baltimore for the wild-card spot.

The Tigers are two games behind the Central-leading Chicago White Sox.

Outscored 18-4 in the first two games, Oakland held down Miguel Cabrera to win the finale. Cabrera singled in four at-bats, and tops the AL in batting at .333.

Josh Donaldson hit a go-ahead single in a four-run sixth inning that made it 6-3, then had an RBI double to cap a six-run ninth that included Smith's three-run double.

"We're not the type of team to score a run here, a run there, two runs here. We're more of a big-inning team, more often than not," Smith said.

Pat Neshek (2-1) retired the only batter he faced and got the win.

Anibal Sanchez (3-6), who held Cleveland hitless for 6 2-3 innings in his last start, gave up six runs on six hits and two walks in 5 2-3 innings.

Smith hit his 14th homer, a solo shot in the fifth that made it 2-all. The Tigers retook the lead in the bottom half when Cabrera singled and scored on Prince Fielder's double.

The A's went ahead for good in the sixth. Brandon Moss hit a tying double with one out and after Chris Carter struck out and Smith was walked intentionally, Donaldson singled.

Phil Coke relieved and George Kottaras hit a liner that center fielder Austin Jackson misjudged, the ball sailing over his head for a two-run triple.

"It kind of knuckled. I was right there. It just took a left turn on me," Jackson said.

Kottaras felt fortunate.

"I knew I hit it good. I saw him coming in. I thought, `Oh no, he's going to catch it,"' Kottaras said. "Then when I saw it go over his glove. I was like `Great!' But then I thought, `I've got to keep running."'

Andy Dirks led off the Detroit sixth with a home run off Jerry Blevins.

Yoenis Cespedes hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to start Oakland's scoring in the ninth.

The Tigers threatened in the first against Tommy Milone, loading the bases before Delmon Young grounded into an inning-ending double play.

"We missed a couple opportunities," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Delmon hit a ball right on the button in the first inning, double-play ball, he hit it right on the nose. We had a couple other opportunities. We had some chances."

Detroit broke through in the second to take a 2-0 lead on Gerald Laird's RBI single and Jackson's sacrifice fly.

Second baseman Omar Infante's throwing error on an attempted double play gave the A's a run in the third. It was his 10th error in 51 games since being acquired from Miami, along with Sanchez, on July 24.

NOTE: Detroit C Alex Avila is no longer having headaches, according to Leyland. Avila sprained his jaw when he collided with Fielder chasing a foul ball on Sunday. ... Cespedes was the designated hitter because of a bone bruise on the bottom of the outfielder's foot that has lingered for the last few days. ... Oakland OF Coco Crisp missed his second game because of an eye allergy. ... The Athletics travel to New York for a three-game weekend series. Jarrod Parker faces CC Sabathia on Friday night. ... Rick Porcello and the Tigers host Sam Dedundo and Minnesota on Friday night.

Lenovo axes Android App Shop, points you in the direction of Google Play

Lenovo axes Android App Shop

Business-types, Lenovo pondered, needed their own App Store Shop, dedicated to selling business-only applications to those strutting around looking serious in their polyester suits. It seems that such demand never materialized, however, with the company shuttering the outlet only six months after its launch and pointing users in the direction of Google Play instead. While the bulk of the apps purchased in that time will still work around 90 that used the store's license management system will cease to function on November 2nd, a list of which you can find at the source link.

[Thanks, Hemal]

Vizio Co-Star

Now that we've had a chance to test both, we're ready to weigh in. Read on to find out if that 50 percent price difference makes the Co-Star worth it.

Cookery course report: Decadent Desserts by Pukka Paki | The UK ...

Desserts and sweets, we were told, are commonly received as gifts in Pakistan, ubiquitous at celebrations such as weddings where the recipients are sometimes literally fed them, one after the other.

Sumayya Jamil?s gift to us came in the form of her Decadent Desserts and Street Snacks masterclass, held on a sunny Saturday afternoon,? at London?s Central Street Cookery School. Thankfully, on this occasion, no force-feeding was required.

Sumayya, aka Pukka Paki, clearly adores food and Pakistani cuisine. She explained that, despite the overwhelming abundance of food during her upbringing, it has continued to dominate her life since settling in the UK, leading, earlier this year, to her quitting her full-time job as a commercial lawyer? to devote her livelihood toward it.

Despite a traditional culinary education at the hands of her mother and grandmother, Sumayya can?t resist applying her own twists to many dishes and in particular desserts which, she explains, allow her the freedom to experiment and get really creative. This is something that thankfully hasn?t offended the ?old guard? , with Madhur Jaffery singing her praises and a Pukka Paki recipe due to feature in Jaffery?s upcoming cookery book.

As we perused the recipes for the class, trying to ignore the pending surge of insulin proved tricky.? First up Barfi, a kind of Pakistani-style fudge, traditionally made with a type of condensed milk known as Khoya or Mawa, was made here using Carnation caramel condensed milk for a Dulce de Leche twist and given the coconut treatment for added decadence.

My personal twist was to burn the mixture in the pan resulting in a decidedly darker and chewier fudge than my classmates but, which, like all happy accidents turned out to be ?everyone?s favourite? (not my words but then neither Sumayya?s, for that matter). These sweets traditionally come adorned with silver leaf, a bit of ?bling? that would have provided my burnt Barfi with some aesthetic assistance.

Picking up momentum, with lessons learnt, we prepared a refreshing ground rice pudding, traditionally an Arabic dish popular in Pakistan and India, known as Firni or Phirni but commonly referred to as Kheer. Regional variations apply, as always, but essentially this is made by boiling ground rice with milk and sugar. For this version, all the stops were resolutely yanked out with condensed milk and ricotta cheese used in the main mixture, which was then flavoured with ground almonds, cardamom, saffron, and a choice of either rose water, rose essence or screw pine water. Most opted for rose essence as the most intense flavour but the screw pine proved a pleasingly subtle concession to a gutsy pudding.

Traditionally, this dish is served in unglazed terracotta bowls, which imparts an earthy flavour and helps cool it right down. We made individual portions in standard stoneware bowls but Sumayya reserved a communal portion in unglazed terracotta? so we could taste the difference for ourselves, which, although subtle, did ensure the pudding was refreshingly cooler; no doubt crucial when faced with an onslaught of glucose.

Next up was Zarda, a traditional Persian dish, again made with rice and condensed milk, which in this case is reduced to a thick, crumbly consistency and known as Khoya. Another mishap occurred (not mine this time) ? Sumayya salvaged a watery rice mixture by covering the pan with a dish cloth, which absorbs excess moisture. All results were pleasing to the eye and taste buds, given, as per this recipe, the ?rainbow? treatment with food colouring and scattered with nuts, candied fruit and dessicated coconut.

Street snacks took the form of pomegranate, ricotta and green chilli samosas, a decidedly Middle-Eastern twist, and okra pakoras with chaat masala, which someone referred to as ?Pakistani tempura?. Both provided a much needed savoury element to an odyssey of sugar, all of which we enjoyed al fresco, with an appropriately ?Indian Summer? (sorry, ?Pakistani Summer?) in full effect.

Cocktails provided liquid and the most renegade of today?s twists. Sumayya had explained that with a Muslim majority prohibiting alcohol, the people of Pakistan celebrate with food instead, so our tamarind, vodka and pomegranate; and lychee, gin and red chilli concoctions were not only uniquely brilliant but felt deliciously rebellious.

At the last minute, Sumayya took full responsibility in making these dissident delights but, along with the pakoras, demonstrated their preparation. Everything else was gratifyingly hands-on with a mixture of individual prep and team work. We each ended up with name-tagged desserts as, clearly, some things are to precious to share but in true Pakistani celebration style, our spoons were dipped in and out of each other?s dishes as we chin-wagged our way through an intense sugar-high.

The food, drink, company and our host were all fantastic and desserts less sweet and rather more nuanced than expected. How much of this was down to Sumayya?s interpretations is hard to fathom, as unfamiliar as most of us were with these dishes, but we were ensured that the less rich and starchy the better, as these traditionally follow-up meat-heavy barbecues, a common food event in Pakistan.

The ultimate aim of Pukka Paki is to demonstrate the sheer diversity of Pakistani food, separate from Indian cuisine, which it is all too commonly lumped in with. Sumayya?s classes are a fantastic introduction to this and take place in various prestigious UK cookery schools, but she also offers private tuition. Her website is an ?Aladdin?s Cave? of tantalising recipes and those wishing to have the experience without the graft can pop along to one of her regular supper clubs.? A sweet tooth is required.

?Pukka Paki cookery courses cost around ?55 for three hours.
